1. Consider the number of knives. Do you need 8, 16, 13, 17? Bigger sets cost more and a lot more specialty knives. If you're not a proficient chef then you may not need the additionals. If you're signing up for a wedding registry then get at least the medium size set if not the biggest. You might as well ask for the best and see what you get.

2. Read reviews. Knives are not all made the same. Read the consumer reviews on any set you are considering. Whether you buy at Amazon or JCPenney you're sure to find comments by other purchasers.

3. Do you need a particular knife? If there's one type of knife you'll probably use all the time be sure your set contains it. Some sets have a cheese knife, others don't.
